Beyond the Default Setup
Getting OpenClaw running is step one. But the default configuration is designed for convenience, not production readiness. If you're using OpenClaw for anything beyond casual experimentation — especially in a professional context — you need to harden the setup.
Security Configuration: Non-Negotiable Steps
OpenClaw runs locally and stores API keys and tokens in plain text configuration files by default. That's fine for a personal laptop. It's not fine for a shared workstation or server deployment.
Start by locking down your gateway configuration in ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json:

gateway.mode: "local" ensures the gateway only runs on your machine. gateway.bind: "loopback" restricts access to localhost — no external connections. auth.mode: "token" requires authentication for all gateway requests.
Next, use nodes.denyCommands to block sensitive actions. I recommend blocking camera.snap, calendar.add, and contacts.add at minimum. You want the AI to ask permission before taking actions that affect your personal data.

Choosing the Right AI Model
OpenClaw supports multiple model providers. Your choice impacts response quality, speed, and cost:
Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4 — My default recommendation. Excellent at following complex multi-step instructions, strong reasoning, and great at code generation. The best balance of capability and cost for most users.
OpenAI GPT-5.2 — Strong alternative with broader world knowledge. Better for creative tasks and general conversation. Slightly higher latency in my experience.
OpenRouter — The wildcard option. Lets you route to any provider including open-source models. Great for experimentation and cost optimization by routing different task types to different models.

Performance Optimization
Three configuration settings make a significant difference:
compaction: "safeguard" — Prevents context loss during long conversations. Without this, OpenClaw may "forget" earlier parts of extended interactions.
maxConcurrent: 4 — Limits parallel task execution. Setting this too high can cause API rate limits and confused responses. Four is the sweet spot for most use cases.
ackReactionScope: "group-mentions" — If you use OpenClaw in group chats, this reduces noise by only responding when explicitly mentioned.
The Knowledge System Deep Dive
OpenClaw's knowledge system is what makes it truly personal. Take time to customize these files:
SOUL.md — Define the AI's personality. Want a professional, concise assistant? A casual, friendly helper? This file shapes every interaction.
USER.md — Store your preferences, work patterns, and context. "I work PST hours." "I prefer concise responses." "My primary project is X." The more context here, the better OpenClaw serves you.
HEARTBEAT.md — Configure what OpenClaw monitors in the background. This is the checklist it runs through periodically to decide if something needs your attention.
Enterprise Considerations
If you're evaluating OpenClaw for team use, be aware of the security implications. Every connected service gives OpenClaw persistent access. A compromised instance could affect all connected systems. Run it in an isolated environment, restrict file system access, and implement proper credential rotation.
